Dear Sharma
Some Raga's are more famous in one region than the other. However, Northern and Southern music differ only in style. Originally there used to be only one system. Once Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan was talking about Charukeshi, and someone objected, "Ustad Ji, Charukeshi is a Southern Raga".
Ustad ji replied in an angry voice, "I don't care if it is Northern or Southern."

Dear Sharma, Thaats don't have anything to do with how a Raag is created in the practical world. Artists create a Raag based on its mood and we just classify them with Thaats. The famous Ragas seem to fit a few famous scales that belong to a few famous Thaats. On the other hand, the Thaat theory, theorizes that 484 Raags can be created from one Thaat. The same theory creates 32 Thaats from seven notes. These are just theories to classify the information you have. Their role to create Raags is secondary.
